High-CBD, Low-THC Strains

High-CBD, low-THC strains are bred so CBD, not THC, is the dominant cannabinoid. The flower is non-intoxicating, and when a plant tests at or below the federal THC limit it is legally hemp. Here are our top CBD strains.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are high-CBD, low-THC strains?
High-CBD, low-THC strains are cannabis varieties bred so CBD is the dominant cannabinoid and THC stays low. The finished flower is non-intoxicating, and a plant that tests at or below 0.3 percent total delta-9 THC is legally hemp.
What strain has the most CBD?
In our catalog, BaOx has the most CBD at roughly 23 percent, followed by Southern Gas at roughly 21 percent. Results vary with growing conditions and harvest timing.
Are there high-CBD strains with no THC?
No. Every cannabis plant produces some THC. Hemp-compliant CBD strains keep THC low enough to stay at or below 0.3 percent total delta-9 THC when harvested on time.
Which CBD strain is best for a first grow?
Big Easy Auto is the simplest place to start. It is an autoflower, so it flowers on age rather than light and finishes on a predictable schedule in a small space. If you have a full outdoor season, BaOx and Southern Gas produce the most CBD.
Can I grow CBD strains at home?
It depends on your state. In states with legal home cultivation, you can usually grow CBD strains under the home grow rules. In most other states, growing CBD cannabis requires a hemp license. Check your state's rules before planting.
When should I harvest CBD strains?
Harvest when most trichomes have turned from clear to cloudy. THC keeps rising late in flower while CBD levels off, so harvesting on time protects compliance. Licensed growers should plan the harvest around their state's testing schedule.
Are CBD seeds legal to buy?
The rules for buying cannabis seeds are changing in 2026. Our guide to cannabis seed laws in 2026 covers where things stand.

What Makes a Strain High-CBD and Low-THC

Every cannabis plant starts with the same compound, CBGA, and converts it into other cannabinoids. Genetics decide where most of it goes. A CBD-dominant plant turns most of it into CBD, which leaves little room for THC. In a CBG-dominant plant like Crystal Vision, the conversion mostly stalls, so CBG builds up instead.

The legal line follows from that. Under the 2018 Farm Bill, cannabis is hemp when it tests at or below 0.3 percent total delta-9 THC on a dry weight basis. The USDA's hemp production rule sets federal testing, and most states license growers on top of it.

There Is No Zero-THC Strain

Every cannabis plant produces some THC, including hemp. What you can find are strains where THC stays very low next to CBD, low enough to test at or below the 0.3 percent total delta-9 THC limit.

Harvest timing decides whether you stay there. CBD levels off late in flower while THC keeps climbing, so a crop left too long can test over the limit. Most CBD varieties are ready when trichomes turn from clear to mostly cloudy.

If you grow under a hemp license, plan the harvest around your state's compliance test. Under the federal rule, harvest has to happen within 30 days of the sample.

Getting Started

CBD strains germinate and grow like any other cannabis. Our germination guide covers the first steps, and the outdoor planting date tool gives a planting window for your zip code. Before planting, check your state's home grow and hemp rules.
