Identify Your Problem
Treatment starts with correct identification, since the wrong treatment wastes time you may not have. Here are the most common pests and diseases indoors and in the greenhouse, and what they look like.
- Spider mites: tiny specks on the tops of leaves, fine webbing in bad infestations. Thrive in warm, dry, stagnant air.
- Powdery mildew: white powdery spots on leaves, spreads fast in high humidity with poor airflow.
- Fungus gnats: small flies around the soil surface, larvae damage roots. Tied to overwatering.
- Aphids: soft-bodied insects clustered on new growth, leave sticky honeydew behind. Ants are attracted to the honeydew, so they are a good sign that you might have aphids.
- Thrips: silvery or scarred patches on leaves, distorted new growth.
- Bud rot (botrytis): forms inside dense buds and works outward, so it is hard to catch early. Shows as soft, discolored, or moldy spots in the densest buds.
How to Treat Common Pests and Disease
Here is the organic treatment path for each, using tools covered in more detail further down.
- Spider mites: for an active infestation, spray insecticidal soap on the undersides of leaves, repeating on a several-day cycle to catch newly hatched mites. Consider this spray your step 1 knock down spray. Then introduce predatory mites (Phytoseiulus persimilis) to clean up and hold the population down. Raise humidity slightly and lower temperature, since mites favor hot, dry air. For the most effective treatment, plan on doing three releases of persimilis predatory mites with each release spaced 5 days apart from one another.
- Powdery mildew: remove the worst-affected leaves, treat remaining growth with potassium bicarbonate or something like Athena’s IPM spray on contact, and correct the humidity and airflow issues that let it start in the first place. Act on the first spot rather than waiting. If your flowers have not started forming yet we suggest using a micronized sulfur spray. This spray gives the plants a quick hit of sulfur which helps the plant defend against PM and is very effective at preventing future infestations.
- Fungus gnats: let the top layer of your growing medium dry out between waterings, hang yellow sticky traps to catch adults, and apply Stratiolaelaps scimitus (predatory mite) to the soil to kill the larvae. These will also kill any thrip larvae as well.
- Aphids: indoors, aphids reproduce too fast for beneficial insects to keep up, so sprays are the better approach. At the first sign, remove leaves with aphids on them, do an insecticidal soap knock-down, then follow with Athena’s IPM spray. A good sprayer that produces a very fine mist for thorough coverage makes a real difference here. Do not waste money on beneficial insects for aphids indoors.
- Thrips: introduce predatory mites (Amblyseius cucumeris) or Orius, and use insecticidal soap or a spinosad product early in the grow only (see the spray cautions below). Consider introducing Stratiolaelaps scimitus (predatory mite) to the soil as well.
- Bud rot (botrytis): there is no good spray fix once it is inside the bud. Cut out affected buds carefully without spreading spores, and lower humidity immediately. If a lot of the plant is affected and conditions favor spread, harvesting early can save the rest. The best approach here is prevention. Make sure to have good airflow and a back up dehumidifier in case yours is not keeping up in late flower.
Beneficial Insects
Beneficial insects are one of the most effective organic tools available, both for treating an active problem and for keeping it from returning. They work differently depending on whether you are indoor or greenhouse.
Matching the insect to the pest:
- Spider mites: predatory mites (Phytoseiulus persimilis for active infestations, Amblyseius species as an ongoing presence)
- Soft-bodied pests: lacewing larvae and ladybugs (note: for aphids indoors, sprays work better than beneficials, since aphids reproduce faster than beneficials can control, see the treatment section above)
- Thrips: Amblyseius cucumeris or Orius species, plus Stratiolaelaps scimitus in the soil to target larvae
- Fungus gnat larvae and other soil pests: beneficial nematodes or Stratiolaelaps scimitus applied to the growing medium
Using them successfully:
- If you already have an active infestation, reduce the pest population first before releasing beneficials, by removing affected leaves and doing a couple of knock-down sprays. Releasing beneficials into a full-blown infestation sets them up to be overwhelmed. The one exception is fungus gnats, where no spray is needed before releasing beneficials.
- The earlier you introduce them, the better they work. Brought in as a rescue after an infestation is well established, they may not outpace the pest population, which is why they are also worth keeping around preventively.
- Indoor growers have an advantage since the enclosed space keeps beneficials from simply leaving. Release in the evening when lights are dimming, and keep humidity in a range the species tolerates.
- Greenhouse growers should expect more beneficials to disperse through vents, so plan for repeat releases rather than a single introduction.
- Give beneficials a reason to stay by avoiding hostile conditions (excess dust, extreme dryness) and not disturbing the canopy right after release.
Combining beneficials with an organic spray program is where a lot of growers unintentionally undo their own work. Many organic sprays, including neem oil and pyrethrins, are broad spectrum and will kill your beneficial insects along with the pests. If you are running both:
- Never spray broad-spectrum products after releasing beneficials unless you are prepared to reintroduce them afterward.
- Btk (Bacillus thuringiensis var. kurstaki) is one of the few organic options safe around most beneficial insects, since it targets caterpillars specifically.
- If you must spray something broad spectrum, do it before introducing beneficials, then wait for the product to break down before release.
Organic Sprays and What to Watch For
Reach for a spray when the situation calls for it, and stick to products that are actually OMRI listed for organic production. The most common:
- Insecticidal soap: contact-only, breaks down quickly, one of the gentler options around beneficials. Good against aphids and spider mites.
- Btk: targeted at caterpillars and budworms specifically, safe around most beneficial insects.
- Athena’s IPM spray: a botanical essential-oil spray useful as a contact treatment on soft-bodied pests like aphids and on powdery mildew, and a convenient all-in-one option to keep on hand.
A few products deserve extra caution even though they are OMRI listed. Pyrethrins and spinosad are both approved for organic production, but cannabis is smoked or vaporized rather than eaten, and most states test finished flower for pesticide residue with tolerances far stricter than what these products were originally cleared for on food crops. Oregon has issued public health recalls after cannabis batches tested with spinosad residue far above the state’s action level, and states including California and New York enforce strict low-tolerance limits on pyrethrins specifically because of inhalation risk. This does not mean these products are banned everywhere, but it does mean timing matters enormously. If you use either one, apply it early in the grow, never in late flower, and give the product plenty of time to break down before harvest. If you are unsure, lean on the gentler options above.
Scouting: Catching Problems Early
The single biggest factor in how much a pest or disease costs you is how early you catch it. Whatever you are treating right now would have been easier to handle a week earlier, and that is the real lesson to carry forward.
Walk your plants regularly. Check the undersides of leaves, the tightest parts of the canopy, and anywhere airflow is weakest. A cheap jeweler’s loupe is enough to catch mites and early mildew before they are visible to the naked eye. And when you see one small speck of powdery mildew or a single aphid, treat it as your cue to act, not as a data point to keep watching. A single spot today can be a colonized leaf next week and a lost cola the week after.
Preventing the Next Outbreak Indoors
Once you have treated the immediate problem, this is how you keep it from happening again. Indoor growers have full control over the environment, which is your best long-term defense.
- Humidity and VPD. High humidity combined with dense canopy is what invites botrytis (bud rot) to form. Keep relative humidity in the target range for your growth stage and watch it closely as buds get denser in late flower.
- Airflow. Stagnant air lets humidity pool inside the canopy where you cannot see it. Oscillating fans and proper exhaust matter as much as any product.
- Sanitation between cycles. Pests and fungal spores persist in tents, ducting, and grow media. Clean and disinfect your grow tent or grow room between grows.
- Quarantine new plants. Inspect anything brought in from outside, including clones, and keep it separate for at least a week. Clones are one of the most common ways spider mites and powdery mildew enter a clean indoor space.

Preventing the Next Outbreak in a Greenhouse
Greenhouse growers get some indoor benefits without all of them, so prevention leans more on structure and exclusion.
- Screening and exclusion. Insect screening on vents and doors keeps out a large share of pests before they ever reach a plant.
- Ventilation timing. Manage airflow around the times of day when humidity naturally spikes, typically early morning, rather than on a fixed schedule.
- Plant spacing. Extra spacing improves airflow and makes scouting easier, both of which matter more here since you cannot fully control humidity with equipment.
- Watch the transition zones. Botrytis and powdery mildew tend to show up first near doors, vents, or anywhere condensation collects.

The Bigger Picture: IPM
Everything above is really one approach, called integrated pest management, or IPM. The idea is that you treat problems with the least disruptive effective tool, you catch them early through regular scouting, and you manage your environment so they are less likely to happen at all.
