Iowa Cannabis Seeds: Common Questions
Yes. Cannabis seeds are legally classified as hemp under the 2018 Farm Bill. The seed itself contains no meaningful THC regardless of what the plant would eventually produce, so purchasing seeds — including high-THC feminized varieties — is legal in Iowa. Triangle Seeds ships cannabis seeds directly to Iowa customers.
Yes. Triangle Seeds ships cannabis seeds to Iowa home growers. Orders are packaged discreetly and typically go out within 1-2 business days. Questions about your order? Text or call us M-F, 10-6 EST at (919) 410-6945.
Cannabis plants are either male or female. Only female plants produce the buds (flowers) you're growing for. Feminized seeds are bred to produce female plants almost exclusively, so you're not wasting space, time, or resources on males that need to be removed. All of the seeds we sell are feminized.
Photoperiod varieties flower in response to a change in light schedule. Outdoors, they begin flowering as days shorten in late summer — across most of Iowa, that means harvest in late September through early October. Indoors, you trigger flowering by switching to a 12-hours-on/12-hours-off schedule. They give more control over plant size and yield but take longer to finish.
Autoflower varieties flower automatically based on age, finishing 9-12 weeks from seed regardless of light schedule. In northern Iowa's shorter frost-free window, autoflowers give licensed hemp growers more flexibility to hit a clean harvest before early fall frosts arrive. Not sure which is right for you? See our Strain Selection Guide.

CBD (cannabidiol) is a non-psychoactive compound found naturally in the cannabis plant, commonly reported as calming and supportive for sleep, stress, and everyday discomfort — without the high associated with THC. CBD seeds are the primary variety grown commercially under Iowa's IDALS hemp licensing program. Iowa's fertile soils and warm summers are well-suited to both fiber hemp and floral CBD production. Home growers can also purchase seeds now to be ready if Iowa legalizes cultivation rights in the future. Browse our CBD seeds or use the Strain Selection Guide to find the right variety.
No — and Iowa's approach is one of the harshest in the Midwest. Under Iowa Code Chapter 124, growing cannabis is treated as a distribution-level offense, not simple possession. Growing even a single plant without a license is a Class D felony carrying up to five years in prison and fines of $750 to $7,500. There is no personal use exception and no protection for registered medical patients. Many Iowa residents are purchasing seeds now to be ready if and when that changes. Read the full Iowa home grow law breakdown.
Yes, but it is one of the most restrictive in the country. Iowa's Medical Cannabidiol Program allows registered patients with qualifying conditions to purchase cannabis-derived products from licensed dispensaries. However, patients are limited to no more than 4.5 grams of total THC per 90-day period — an extremely low ceiling that limits the program's practical value for many conditions. Smokable flower and most edible forms are prohibited. Approved forms include oral tablets, tinctures, topicals, vaporizable products, and patches. Home cultivation is not permitted. Out-of-state medical patients may use their cannabis products while visiting Iowa but cannot purchase from Iowa dispensaries.
No. Iowa does not have a citizen initiative process for statutes. Unlike states such as Idaho or Florida where residents can gather signatures to put measures on the ballot, all cannabis reform in Iowa must be passed by the legislature. This means there is no direct democratic path for Iowa voters to legalize cannabis or home cultivation outside of electing legislators who will advance reform bills. Bills to decriminalize possession and expand the medical program have been introduced in recent sessions but none have advanced. Iowa remains one of only 19 states that still imposes jail time for simple possession.
Yes, with a grower license from the Iowa Department of Agriculture and Land Stewardship (IDALS). Applications are submitted online at hemp.iowaagriculture.gov. Outdoor growers must apply by April 15 each year. Indoor growers can apply at any time on a rolling basis. Iowa has one of the more compliance-intensive hemp programs in the country — all pre-harvest inspections are conducted directly by IDALS staff (you cannot hire your own sampling agent), and you must notify IDALS at least 30 days before your anticipated harvest date. After clearance, you must obtain a temporary harvest and transportation permit before moving your crop. See the full Iowa hemp licensing walkthrough for step-by-step details.
Iowa's fee structure scales with acreage and includes a mandatory pre-harvest inspection fee that is separate from the license itself:
License fee (non-refundable): $500 for 0-5 acres, $750 for 5.1-10 acres, $1,000 for 10.1-40 acres, plus $5 per acre for all sizes.
Pre-harvest inspection fee: $1,000 base fee per license, paid separately. Each additional sample beyond the base inspection adds a $500 supplemental fee. A secondary inspection also starts at $1,000.
For a small grower with a single lot, minimum first-year costs before a seed goes in the ground typically run $1,500 to $2,000 depending on acreage — making Iowa's total entry cost higher than most states in the region.

Iowa spans USDA hardiness zones 4b through 6a. The northern tier sits in zones 4b and 5a, while the southern counties reach zone 6a. The outdoor growing season runs from mid-May through October in central and southern Iowa, with a shorter frost-free window in the north. Iowa's deep, fertile soils and warm summers are well-suited to fiber hemp and grain hemp, as well as floral CBD production. Photoperiod varieties finish in late September through early October across most of the state. In northern Iowa, where the frost-free window is tighter, autoflowers and short-season strains are the more reliable choice. Enter your zip code on our zone map for your specific window, then browse our full-season varieties, short-season varieties, or autoflowering varieties.
In central and southern Iowa (zones 5a-6a), start seeds indoors in early to mid-April and transplant outdoors after your last frost — typically early to mid-May. Photoperiod varieties started in April will flower in late August and finish in late September through early October. In northern Iowa (zones 4b-5a), target a mid-to-late May transplant and lean toward autoflowers or short-season strains to finish before fall frosts arrive. Keep in mind that outdoor licensed hemp growers in Iowa must submit their planting report to IDALS within 14 days of planting. Check your zip code on our outdoor planting tool for your exact dates, or see our germination guide for step-by-step starting instructions.
