North Carolina Cannabis Seeds: Common Questions

Yes. Cannabis seeds are legally classified as hemp under the 2018 Farm Bill. The seed itself contains no meaningful THC regardless of what the plant would eventually produce, so purchasing seeds — including high-THC feminized varieties — is legal in North Carolina. Triangle Seeds ships cannabis seeds directly to NC customers.
Yes. Triangle Seeds ships cannabis seeds to North Carolina — and we're based right here in Raleigh, NC. Orders are packaged discreetly and typically go out within 1-2 business days. Questions about your order? Text or call us M-F, 10-6 EST at (919) 410-6945.
Cannabis plants are either male or female. Only female plants produce the buds (flowers) you're growing for. Feminized seeds are bred to produce female plants almost exclusively, so you're not wasting space, time, or resources on males that need to be removed. All of the seeds we sell are feminized.
Photoperiod varieties flower in response to a change in light schedule. Outdoors, they begin flowering naturally as days shorten in late summer — in most of NC, that means harvest in late September through mid-October. Indoors, you trigger flowering by switching to a 12-hours-on/12-hours-off schedule. They typically take longer to finish but give more control over plant size and yield.

Autoflower varieties flower automatically based on age, usually finishing 9-12 weeks from seed regardless of light schedule. North Carolina's long Piedmont and coastal growing season supports both types outdoors with ease. Not sure which is right for you? See our Strain Selection Guide.
CBD (cannabidiol) is a non-psychoactive compound found naturally in the cannabis plant. People commonly report CBD as calming and supportive for sleep, stress, and everyday discomfort — without the high associated with THC. CBD seeds are also legal to grow commercially in North Carolina with a USDA hemp production license, making them an option for small-scale licensed growers as well as home growers preparing for potential legalization. Browse our CBD seeds or use the Strain Selection Guide to find the right variety.
Not currently. Home cultivation of cannabis for personal use is illegal under North Carolina law in 2026. There is no adult-use program and no statewide medical marijuana program that would permit home cultivation. That said, legislation is actively moving — House Bill 413 and Senate Bill 1072 are both pending, and Governor Stein's Advisory Council on Cannabis is developing a legalization framework through December 2026. Many NC residents are purchasing seeds now to be ready when that changes. Read the full North Carolina home grow law breakdown.
Yes, with a valid USDA hemp production license. North Carolina growers apply through the USDA's Hemp eManagement Platform (HeMP) at hemp.ams.usda.gov. The license itself is free, but you are responsible for a background check, a USDA-certified sampling agent, and laboratory testing before each harvest. There is no minimum acreage to apply. See the full NC hemp licensing walkthrough for step-by-step instructions.
Yes. Adults 21 and older can legally purchase and possess cannabis on the Qualla Boundary, the tribal lands of the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians in western NC. Adult-use sales have been active since September 2024. Tribal sovereignty allows the EBCI to set its own cannabis laws independent of state law. State law applies the moment you leave tribal land.
Two bills are pending as of May 2026. House Bill 413 would legalize adult-use cannabis for adults 21 and older with a social equity framework. Senate Bill 1072, filed in May 2026, would place two constitutional amendments on the November 2026 ballot — one to decriminalize possession for all adults and one to legalize medical cannabis for qualifying patients. Neither bill currently includes a home cultivation right, which would need to be added explicitly. Governor Stein's Advisory Council on Cannabis is also developing a full legalization framework through December 2026. Read the full NC cannabis law update for details.
Most of North Carolina falls in USDA hardiness zones 6a through 8a, with the Piedmont and coastal plain in zones 7 and 8. The outdoor season in most of the state runs from mid-May through October — long enough to support full-season photoperiod varieties with ease. The western mountains (zones 6 and lower) have a shorter window where autoflowers and short-season varieties perform best. Humidity during late summer and fall in the coastal plain makes mold-resistant genetics a smart choice. Enter your zip code on our zone map for your specific planting window, then browse our full-season varieties, short-season varieties, or autoflowering varieties.
In the Piedmont and coastal plain (zones 7-8), start seeds indoors in late March to mid-April and transplant outdoors after your last frost date — typically mid-April through early May. Photoperiod varieties started in April will flower in late August and finish in late September through mid-October. In the western mountains (zone 6), target a late May transplant and consider autoflowers or short-season strains to stay ahead of early fall cold snaps. Check your zip code on our outdoor planting tool for your exact dates, or see our germination guide for step-by-step starting instructions.
