Idaho Cannabis Seeds: Common Questions

Yes. Cannabis seeds are legally classified as hemp under the 2018 Farm Bill. The seed itself contains no meaningful THC regardless of what the plant would eventually produce, so purchasing seeds — including high-THC feminized varieties — is legal in Idaho. Triangle Seeds ships cannabis seeds directly to Idaho customers.
Yes. Triangle Seeds ships cannabis seeds to Idaho home growers. Orders are packaged discreetly and typically go out within 1-2 business days. Questions about your order? Text or call us M-F, 10-6 EST at (919) 410-6945.
Cannabis plants are either male or female. Only female plants produce the buds (flowers) you're growing for. Feminized seeds are bred to produce female plants almost exclusively, so you're not wasting space, time, or resources on males that need to be removed. All of the seeds we sell are feminized.
Photoperiod varieties flower in response to a change in light schedule. Outdoors, they begin flowering as days shorten in late summer. Indoors, you trigger flowering by switching to a 12-hours-on/12-hours-off schedule. They give more control over plant size and yield but take longer to finish.

Autoflower varieties flower automatically based on age, finishing 9-12 weeks from seed regardless of light schedule. For Idaho's shorter growing season and variable weather — particularly in the higher elevation zones — autoflowers are often the strongest fit for licensed hemp growers. They allow you to target a harvest before early fall frosts arrive without relying on day-length changes to trigger flowering. Not sure which is right for you? See our Strain Selection Guide.
CBD (cannabidiol) is a non-psychoactive compound found naturally in the cannabis plant, commonly reported as calming and supportive for sleep, stress, and everyday discomfort — without the high associated with THC. CBD seeds are the primary variety grown commercially under Idaho's ISDA hemp licensing program. One thing worth knowing for Idaho: while growers can cultivate hemp under the federal 0.3% THC threshold, finished hemp products sold within Idaho must contain 0.0% THC — below the limit of detection. That distinction matters if you're planning downstream use of your crop within the state. Home growers can also purchase seeds now to be ready if Idaho expands cultivation rights. Browse our CBD seeds or use the Strain Selection Guide to find the right variety.
No. Idaho is one of the most restrictive cannabis states in the country. There is no medical program, no recreational program, and no decriminalization. Home cultivation is a criminal offense at any scale with no personal use exception. As of July 1, 2025, even simple possession of up to 3 ounces carries a mandatory minimum $300 fine — a change the legislature made to remove judges' discretion on penalties. Many Idaho residents are purchasing seeds now to be ready if and when that changes. Read the full Idaho home grow law breakdown.
No. Idaho has no decriminalization law, and the legislature has been moving in the opposite direction. HB 7, signed in February 2025 and effective July 1, 2025, added a mandatory minimum $300 fine for misdemeanor possession of up to 3 ounces — eliminating judges' previous ability to impose lower fines. Possession above 3 ounces is a felony. Idaho is one of only a handful of states where the trend has been toward tighter restrictions rather than loosening.
Two significant measures are headed to Idaho voters in November 2026. The first is the Idaho Medical Cannabis Act — a citizen initiative that would legalize medical cannabis for individuals with at least one of 16 qualifying conditions. The campaign submitted over 150,000 signatures by the May 1, 2026 deadline, more than double the roughly 70,700 valid signatures required. County clerks have until June 30 to verify them. If certified, voters will decide on November 3, 2026. The initiative does not include home cultivation rights.

The second is HJR 4, a legislatively-referred constitutional amendment that would permanently remove citizens' ability to put cannabis (and other psychoactive substance) initiatives on the Idaho ballot. If both measures pass in the same election, medical cannabis becomes law — but no future citizen-driven expansion would be possible through the initiative process.
This is where Idaho differs from every other state in the country. While federal law and most states allow hemp-derived products to contain up to 0.3% delta-9 THC, Idaho law requires that finished hemp products sold in the state contain 0.0% THC — below the limit of detection. Products with any detectable amount of THC remain illegal under Idaho state law, regardless of how low the concentration is. This does not affect the purchase of cannabis seeds, which are legally classified as hemp under the 2018 Farm Bill.
Yes, with a Producer License from the Idaho State Department of Agriculture (ISDA). The application window runs September 1 through December 31 for a license valid the following calendar year. Applications submitted after December 31 are still accepted through the end of that calendar year with a $250 late fee. The combined application and license fee is $600 ($100 application + $500 license). Like Georgia, do not get fingerprinted until ISDA emails you with specific instructions — the background check requires fingerprinting at approved locations only, and using the wrong provider can delay your application or cost you extra. See the full Idaho hemp licensing walkthrough for step-by-step details.
The total upfront cost is $600 — a $100 non-refundable application fee plus a $500 license fee. If you miss the December 31 application deadline, an additional $250 late fee applies. Ongoing costs include an annual fingerprint background check for all key participants, pre-harvest THC compliance testing paid directly to an ISDA-approved lab, and a $50 site change fee if you modify any registered growing locations. If a crop tests non-compliant and requires remediation testing, a $325 fee applies. Idaho's base licensing cost is among the most accessible in the country for a state-run program.
Idaho spans USDA hardiness zones 3b through 7a — one of the wider ranges of any state in this region. The Snake River Plain, including Boise, Twin Falls, and Pocatello, falls in zones 6 and 7 with a growing season of roughly 120 to 150 frost-free days. Northern Idaho around Coeur d'Alene is zone 6. High mountain regions in central and eastern Idaho drop to zones 4 and 5, with a significantly shorter frost-free window. Autoflowering varieties are the strongest fit across most of Idaho for licensed growers — their 9-12 week finish time allows growers to target harvest before early fall frosts without depending on day-length shifts. In the warmer Snake River zones, short-season photoperiod varieties are also workable with careful timing. Enter your zip code on our zone map for your specific window, then browse our autoflowering varieties, short-season varieties, or CBD seeds.
In the Snake River Plain (zones 6-7), the last frost typically falls in late April to mid-May. Start seeds indoors in late March to early April and transplant outdoors in mid-May once frost risk has passed. Autoflowers started in May will finish by late July to August — ahead of early fall frost risk. In the higher elevation zones (4-5), last frost can extend into June; target a late May to early June transplant and rely on autoflowers to complete the cycle within the available window. Check your zip code on our outdoor planting tool for your exact dates, or see our germination guide for step-by-step starting instructions.
