Washington DC Cannabis Seeds: Common Questions
Yes. DC voters passed Initiative 71 in November 2014, legalizing home cultivation and personal possession for adults 21 and older effective February 26, 2015. Cannabis seeds are federally legal hemp products under the 2018 Farm Bill and can be purchased and shipped to DC. Triangle Hemp ships seeds directly to Washington DC customers.

Cannabis plants are either male or female. Only female plants produce the buds (flowers) you're growing for. Feminized seeds are bred to produce female plants almost exclusively, so you're not wasting space, time, or resources on males that need to be removed. All of the seeds we sell are feminized.
Photoperiod varieties flower in response to a change in light schedule. Outdoors, they begin flowering naturally as days shorten in late summer. Indoors, you trigger flowering by switching to a 12-hours-on/12-hours-off schedule. They typically take longer to finish but give more control over plant size and yield.
Autoflower varieties flower automatically based on age, usually finishing 9-12 weeks from seed regardless of light schedule. DC's outdoor season supports both types, but autoflowers are especially practical for urban growers working in tight spaces who want faster harvests. Not sure which is right for you? See our Strain Selection Guide.

CBD (cannabidiol) and CBG (cannabigerol) are non-psychoactive compounds found naturally in the cannabis plant. People commonly report CBD as calming and supportive for sleep, stress, and everyday discomfort. CBG is often described as more clarifying, associated with focus and a lighter sense of ease. Both are widely used as alternatives to pharmaceutical options for mild anxiety, inflammation, and pain.
Many growers find that blending CBD or CBG varieties with THC varieties produces a more balanced experience. Growing your own gives you direct control over what goes into your plants. Check out our Strain Selection Guide to explore our hemp varieties.

Each adult 21 or older may grow up to six plants, with no more than three mature and flowering at any one time under Initiative 71. Unlike most states, DC's limit is per adult — two adults sharing a residence can legally maintain up to twelve total plants with no more than six in flower. No permit, registration, or plant tagging is required. Read the full DC home grow law breakdown for details.
DC is not a state — Congress retains oversight authority over DC's budget and laws. A provision called the "Harris rider" has been attached to federal spending bills since 2014, blocking DC from using local funds to regulate and tax adult-use commercial cannabis sales. You can legally grow and possess cannabis in DC, but there is no regulated recreational retail market. The DC medical program allows adults 21 and older to self-certify and purchase from licensed dispensaries. See our DC home grow laws guide for the full picture.
Yes. Outdoor cultivation is permitted as long as plants are not visible from any public space. DC sits in USDA Zones 7a-7b with roughly 200 frost-free days and an outdoor season from late April through mid-October — long enough for full-season photoperiod varieties. The main practical challenge for DC's urban growers is finding a private space with adequate screening. A fenced backyard or private rooftop not visible from the street or neighboring properties works. Use our zone map to find your specific planting dates.
No. Federal property is federal jurisdiction. Possessing or consuming cannabis anywhere on federally owned land — including the National Mall, Rock Creek Park, all federal buildings, Metro stations, and airports — is illegal under federal law. Initiative 71 provides no protection on federal property. DC contains an unusually large amount of federal land, so this distinction matters more here than anywhere else in the country.
DC sits in USDA Zones 7a-7b with a long outdoor season from late April through mid-October. Full-season photoperiod varieties started in late April or May can finish comfortably in October. Autoflowering varieties finishing in 70-80 days are a practical choice for urban growers with limited space, and can yield two runs per outdoor season. DC's hot, humid summers make mold-resistant genetics worth prioritizing for outdoor grows. Enter your zip code on our zone map for your specific window, then browse our full-season varieties, short-season varieties, or autoflowering varieties.
DC's last frost is typically around late March. Most outdoor growers start seeds indoors in late March to April and transplant outdoors in late April to early May. A full-season photoperiod plant started in April will begin flowering naturally in late August and can finish by October. Autoflowers started in late May can complete by late August, leaving time for a second run before the season ends. Check your zip code on our zone map for specific dates, or see our germination guide for step-by-step starting instructions.
