New Jersey Cannabis Seeds: Common Questions

Yes. Cannabis seeds are legally classified as hemp under the 2018 Farm Bill. The seed itself contains no meaningful THC regardless of what the plant would eventually produce, so purchasing seeds — including high-THC feminized varieties — is legal in New Jersey. Triangle Seeds ships cannabis seeds directly to New Jersey customers.
Yes. Triangle Seeds ships cannabis seeds to New Jersey home growers. Orders are packaged discreetly and typically go out within 1-2 business days. Questions about your order? Text or call us M-F, 10-6 EST at (919) 410-6945.
Cannabis plants are either male or female. Only female plants produce the buds (flowers) you're growing for. Feminized seeds are bred to produce female plants almost exclusively, so you're not wasting space, time, or resources on males that need to be removed. All of the seeds we sell are feminized.
Photoperiod varieties flower in response to a change in light schedule. Outdoors, they begin flowering as days shorten in late summer — across most of New Jersey, that means harvest in late September through mid-October. Indoors, you trigger flowering by switching to a 12-hours-on/12-hours-off schedule. They give more control over plant size and yield but take longer to finish.

Autoflower varieties flower automatically based on age, finishing 9-12 weeks from seed regardless of light schedule. For licensed hemp growers in northern New Jersey, autoflowers offer flexibility against early frost. Statewide, they give growers more control over harvest timing relative to late-season weather. Not sure which is right for you? See our Strain Selection Guide.
CBD (cannabidiol) is a non-psychoactive compound found naturally in the cannabis plant, commonly reported as calming and supportive for sleep, stress, and everyday discomfort — without the high associated with THC. CBD seeds are the primary variety grown commercially under New Jersey's NJDA hemp licensing program. New Jersey's southern coastal plain — Burlington, Cumberland, and Salem counties — has some of the most productive farmland in the region and is particularly well-suited to outdoor CBD hemp production. Browse our CBD seeds or use the Strain Selection Guide to find the right variety.
No — and this surprises many people given that New Jersey has had legal adult-use cannabis since April 2022. Home cultivation was simply not included when the CREAMM Act was signed in February 2021. New Jersey is one of only a handful of legalization states — alongside Delaware, Illinois, and Washington — that still prohibits home grows. Under current law, cultivating even one plant is treated as manufacturing: one ounce to five pounds is a third-degree crime carrying three to five years in prison and fines up to $25,000. This applies to recreational users and registered medical patients equally. Many New Jersey residents are purchasing seeds now to be ready if and when that changes. Read the full New Jersey home grow law breakdown.
Yes. Adults 21 and older can legally purchase and possess up to six ounces of cannabis flower or equivalent in New Jersey. Retail adult-use sales launched in April 2022 and the market has grown to nearly $1 billion in annual sales. A 6.625% state sales tax plus a Social Equity Excise Fee and up to 2% local tax applies to adult-use purchases. Medical cannabis remains tax-exempt. Public consumption and consumption in vehicles are prohibited. Localities can opt out of allowing retail cannabis businesses.
Three bills are pending as of May 2026. S2564 would allow adults 21 and older to grow up to six plants for personal recreational use, with a 12-plant household cap — it has been active in the Senate Judiciary Committee but has not reached a floor vote. A1674 and S1758 are companion bills that would allow registered medical patients to grow up to four mature and four immature plants for personal therapeutic use. Medical-only home grow bills have historically had slightly more political traction in New Jersey, though neither has advanced to a committee vote in 2026. Assembly Health Committee Chair Herb Conaway has consistently been a blocking factor. The new governor's position on these bills will be a significant factor in whether any advance in 2026.
New Jersey's average retail price has been over $30 per gram — among the highest in the country. Several factors contribute: the state's high cost of doing business, a competitive but capacity-constrained licensing structure, and the Social Equity Excise Fee layered on top of standard sales tax. Cannabis advocates have used the high retail price as a primary argument for legalizing home cultivation, noting that it drives consumers to neighboring states like New York and Pennsylvania and sustains illicit market activity. In a February 2026 Cannabis Regulatory Commission public meeting, commenters cited Maine's home grow framework as a model for New Jersey to follow.
Yes, with a grower license from the New Jersey Department of Agriculture (NJDA). New Jersey runs its own USDA-approved state hemp program, which has been accepting licensed growers since 2020. Applications are submitted by email to NJHemp@ag.nj.gov or by mail to NJDA (PO Box 330, Trenton, NJ 08625) — virtual submission is encouraged for faster processing. You must complete a New Jersey State Police background check before submitting and attach the printout to your application. Every application must be fully typed and complete; NJDA does not accept responsibility for formatting errors or missing information. Licenses are valid for one year and must be renewed annually. See the full New Jersey hemp licensing walkthrough for step-by-step details.
New Jersey's fee structure is among the most accessible in the Northeast:

Application fee: $50 non-refundable — one of the lowest in the country.

License fee: $300 base plus $15 per acre. A 1-acre grow costs $315. A 10-acre grow costs $450. A 100-acre grow costs $1,800.

Payment is submitted as two separate checks or money orders payable to the New Jersey Department of Agriculture — one for the application fee and one for the license fee. Pre-harvest testing costs are paid directly to the sampling agent and lab.
New Jersey spans USDA zones 6a through 7b. The northern counties including the Skylands region fall in zone 6a, the central region sits in zones 6b and 7a, and the southern coastal areas and Cape May County reach zones 7a and 7b. The outdoor growing season runs from mid-May through October across most of the state, with the southern coastal plain offering a somewhat longer window. New Jersey's moderate Mid-Atlantic climate is well-suited to outdoor hemp cultivation. Photoperiod varieties finish in late September through mid-October across the state. In the northern zone 6a counties, autoflowers and short-season strains reduce frost risk at harvest. The southern coastal plain — Burlington, Cumberland, and Salem counties — is among the most productive agricultural land in the region. Enter your zip code on our zone map for your specific window, then browse our full-season varieties, short-season varieties, or autoflowering varieties.
Across most of New Jersey (zones 6b-7a), start seeds indoors in early to mid-April and transplant outdoors after your last frost — typically late April to early May. Photoperiod varieties started in April will flower in late August and finish in late September through mid-October. In the northern Skylands counties (zone 6a), target a mid-May transplant and consider autoflowers or short-season strains to avoid early fall frost risk. In the southern coastal counties (zones 7a-7b), you can push transplants to early April with a lower frost risk. Check your zip code on our outdoor planting tool for your exact dates, or see our germination guide for step-by-step starting instructions.
