Cultivation Notes
Sour Diesel typically finishes flowering in around 70 to 75 days, forming a tall, open structure with pronounced stretch and strong lateral branching. Indoors it can produce up to 65 grams per sq ft, while outdoor plants given enough space and warm conditions can grow significantly larger. Buds develop with a lighter green tone, long orange pistils, and a terpene profile that becomes increasingly intense as harvest approaches. This cultivar responds well to training techniques that open the canopy and thrives in setups with steady airflow and room to stretch.
Additional Info
Many people describe the overall experience as bright and lively at first, gradually settling into a more grounded and steady feeling. The terpene profile blends sour citrus, earth, and a classic fuel note that has become the signature of the Sour Diesel family. Outdoors, this strain can reach impressive size and reward growers with very large yields when given long days and stable warmth. Its combination of vigor, aroma, and recognizable heritage has made Sour Diesel one of the most enduring and widely appreciated cultivars in the modern cannabis world.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is Sour Diesel a Sativa, Indica, or Hybrid?
Sativa Dominant Hybrid
Is Sour Diesel an Autoflower or Photoperiod strain?
Sour Diesel is a Photoperiod strain. Photoperiod varieties flower when the light schedule changes (typically 12 hours on / 12 hours off). They take longer than autoflowers but give you more control over plant size and yield. Autoflower varieties flower automatically based on age, usually finishing 9 to 12 weeks from seed — no light timing required.
How long does it take Sour Diesel to grow?
Photoperiod strains give you more control over timing, but they take longer overall — typically 3 to 5 months from seed to harvest. You'll spend 4 to 8 weeks in vegetative growth (where you control how big the plant gets), then switch to a 12/12 light schedule to trigger flowering, which takes another 7 to 10 weeks depending on the strain. Indoor growers have full control over when to flip, while outdoor harvests generally land between late September and mid-October. Check the strain details above for specific flowering time estimates, and visit our growing guide for a full walkthrough.

How do I germinate Sour Diesel seeds?
We recommend the paper towel method for the most reliable results. Start with a 24-hour soak in a hydrogen peroxide solution (1 part 3% H2O2 to 6 parts water) to boost germination rates. After soaking, place your seeds between two damp paper towels inside a container or plastic bag, and keep them in a warm spot (around 75 to 80°F). Most seeds crack open within 24 to 72 hours. Once a taproot appears, transfer the seed gently into your growing medium about a quarter-inch deep. For a full walkthrough, check out our germination guide.
