Louisiana Cannabis Seeds: Common Questions

Yes. Cannabis seeds are legally classified as hemp under the 2018 Farm Bill. The seed itself contains no meaningful THC regardless of what the plant would eventually produce, so purchasing seeds — including high-THC feminized varieties — is legal in Louisiana. Triangle Seeds ships cannabis seeds directly to Louisiana customers.
Yes. Triangle Seeds ships cannabis seeds to Louisiana home growers. Orders are packaged discreetly and typically go out within 1-2 business days. Questions about your order? Text or call us M-F, 10-6 EST at (919) 410-6945.
Cannabis plants are either male or female. Only female plants produce the buds (flowers) you're growing for. Feminized seeds are bred to produce female plants almost exclusively, so you're not wasting space, time, or resources on males that need to be removed. All of the seeds we sell are feminized.
Photoperiod varieties flower in response to a change in light schedule. Outdoors, they begin flowering as days shorten in late summer — across most of Louisiana, that means harvest in October. Indoors, you trigger flowering by switching to a 12-hours-on/12-hours-off schedule. They give more control over plant size and yield but take longer to finish.

Autoflower varieties flower automatically based on age, finishing 9-12 weeks from seed regardless of light schedule. Louisiana's exceptionally long frost-free season supports multiple planting cycles per year for licensed growers, and autoflowers are particularly useful for timing harvest ahead of late-season tropical weather or fall humidity in the coastal parishes. Not sure which is right for you? See our Strain Selection Guide.
CBD (cannabidiol) is a non-psychoactive compound found naturally in the cannabis plant, commonly reported as calming and supportive for sleep, stress, and everyday discomfort — without the high associated with THC. CBD seeds are the primary variety grown commercially under Louisiana's LDAF hemp licensing program. Louisiana's warm climate and long growing season are well-suited to outdoor CBD hemp production. Home growers can also purchase seeds now to be ready if Louisiana legalizes home cultivation in the future. Browse our CBD seeds or use the Strain Selection Guide to find the right variety.
No — and Louisiana's cultivation penalties are among the most severe in the South despite having a decriminalization law on the books. Growing any cannabis plant without a license is a felony carrying a mandatory minimum of one year in prison, up to 10 years, and fines up to $50,000. There is no personal-use exception and no minimum plant count — even a single plant triggers these penalties. Louisiana's 2021 decriminalization applies only to possession of 14 grams or less and did not include cultivation. This applies to everyone, including registered medical patients. Many Louisiana residents are purchasing seeds now to be ready if and when that changes. Read the full Louisiana home grow law breakdown.
Partially. Louisiana decriminalized possession of 14 grams or less in 2021 — any offense at or below that threshold now carries a $100 fine with no jail time. Possession of more than 14 grams remains a criminal offense with escalating felony penalties. Cultivation, distribution, and sale are serious felonies regardless of amount. New Orleans, Shreveport, and East Baton Rouge have also passed local ordinances reducing or eliminating local enforcement of small possession, though state law still applies.
Yes — if you are licensed. Louisiana's LDAF explicitly states there is no minimum acreage requirement and that licensed growers can grow hemp plants in their yard. This makes Louisiana one of the few states to directly acknowledge and permit residential-scale hemp cultivation. The annual license fee is a flat $500 regardless of whether you are growing in a backyard plot or on a large farm. Pre-harvest THC testing at $250 per sample is required before harvest. If you want to grow a small number of hemp plants legally at home in Louisiana, getting licensed through LDAF is the pathway. See the full Louisiana hemp licensing walkthrough.
Yes — and Louisiana's program works differently from most states. Rather than requiring patients to register with a state database and carry a medical cannabis card, Louisiana uses a physician recommendation model. Any licensed Louisiana physician in good standing can recommend cannabis to a qualifying patient — no special training or state registration is required of the doctor. The physician's recommendation goes directly to the dispensary. Patients can purchase from any of the state's 23 licensed pharmacy dispensaries and can possess up to 2.5 ounces of raw cannabis flower per 14-day period. Home cultivation is not permitted. Medical cannabis is subject to standard Louisiana state sales tax plus applicable local parish taxes.
HB 373, filed in February 2026, would establish an Adult-Use Cannabis Pilot Program in Louisiana allowing recreational sales to adults 21 and older beginning in 2027 and running through mid-2030. To limit political opposition, the bill would restrict participation to Louisiana's existing licensed medical cannabis businesses — each one could designate a single retail location per region — rather than opening the market to new operators. The Louisiana Department of Health would oversee the pilot. As of May 2026, the bill is pending in the House Health and Welfare Committee. A nearly identical bill failed in committee in 2025. Home cultivation is not included in HB 373 — even if passed, growing your own plants at home would remain a felony.
Yes, with a grower license from the Louisiana Department of Agriculture and Forestry (LDAF). Applications are accepted on a rolling basis with no annual deadline. You can apply online or by paper form at ldaf.la.gov/plants/industrial-hemp. You will need to submit a color photographic map of each cultivation site with GPS coordinates and complete both a Louisiana State Police fingerprint background check and an FBI fingerprint background check. Do not pay the $500 license fee until after your application has been reviewed and approved — payment is due only upon notification of approval. See the full Louisiana hemp licensing walkthrough for step-by-step details.
The annual grower license fee is a flat $500 regardless of acreage — there is no per-acre or per-site calculation. A yard grower and a large commercial operation pay the same fee. The primary ongoing cost beyond the license is the $250 per-sample THC testing fee, due at the time LDAF collects each sample before harvest. Each lot must be sampled separately. Background check fingerprinting at a local law enforcement agency or Louisiana State Police office adds a modest additional cost at application and renewal.
Louisiana spans USDA zones 7b through 9b — one of the warmest ranges in the continental United States. The northern parishes fall in zones 7b and 8a, while the Gulf Coast parishes including New Orleans sit in zones 9a and 9b. The frost-free season runs from late February through late November across much of the south, giving licensed growers one of the longest outdoor windows in the country. Photoperiod varieties typically finish in October across most of Louisiana. In the coastal parishes, late-season tropical weather and fall humidity are real factors — mold-resistant genetics are worth prioritizing for floral hemp production in those areas. Autoflowers are well-suited to timing harvest during drier windows and can allow multiple planting cycles per season in the south. Enter your zip code on our zone map for your specific window, then browse our full-season varieties, short-season varieties, or autoflowering varieties.
Louisiana's long season gives licensed growers exceptional flexibility. In the northern parishes (zones 7b-8a), start seeds indoors in late March to early April and transplant after the last frost — typically mid-April. Photoperiod varieties will flower in late August and finish in October. In central and southern Louisiana (zones 8b-9b), transplants can go out as early as late February to March, and autoflowers can run multiple cycles between March and November. In the Gulf Coast parishes, summer heat and humidity favor finishing floral hemp before peak summer or timing harvest for late September to October when conditions are more stable. Check your zip code on our outdoor planting tool for your exact dates, or see our germination guide for step-by-step starting instructions.
