New York Cannabis Growers: FAQs

Yes. New York legalized adult-use cannabis in 2021 under the Marihuana Regulation and Taxation Act (MRTA), and home cultivation became legal for adults 21 and older on June 26, 2024, when the Office of Cannabis Management's regulations went into effect. Adults may legally purchase cannabis seeds for personal cultivation. Triangle Seeds ships cannabis seeds directly to New York customers.
Yes. Triangle Seeds ships cannabis seeds to New York home growers. Orders are packaged discreetly and typically go out within 1-2 business days. Questions about your order? Text or call us M-F, 10-6 EST at (919) 410-6945.
Cannabis plants are either male or female. Only female plants produce the buds (flowers) you're growing for. Feminized seeds are bred to produce female plants almost exclusively, so you're not wasting space, time, or resources on males that need to be removed. All of the seeds we sell are feminized.
Photoperiod varieties flower in response to a change in light schedule. Outdoors, they begin flowering naturally as days shorten in late summer. Indoors, you trigger flowering by switching to a 12-hours-on/12-hours-off schedule. They typically take longer to finish but give you more control over plant size and yield.

Autoflower varieties flower automatically based on age, usually finishing 9-12 weeks from seed regardless of light schedule. They're faster and more forgiving, making them a strong choice for new growers or anyone who wants multiple harvests per season outdoors. Not sure which is right for you? See our Strain Selection Guide.
CBD (cannabidiol) and CBG (cannabigerol) are non-psychoactive compounds found naturally in the cannabis plant. People commonly report CBD as calming and supportive for sleep, stress, and everyday discomfort. CBG is often described as more clarifying, associated with focus and a lighter sense of ease. Both are widely used as alternatives to pharmaceutical options for mild anxiety, inflammation, and pain.

Many growers find that blending CBD or CBG varieties with THC varieties produces a more balanced experience. Growing your own gives you direct control over what goes into your plants and lets you experiment with ratios that work for you. Check out our Strain Selection Guide to explore our hemp varieties.
Adults 21 and older may grow up to six plants per person — three mature (flowering) and three immature. Households are capped at twelve plants total: six mature and six immature, regardless of how many adults live there. New York tracks mature and immature plants separately, so understanding which stage your plants are in matters for staying within your limits. Read the full New York home grow law breakdown for details.
Yes. Outdoor, greenhouse, and indoor cultivation are all permitted. Outdoor grows must not be visible from a public street or common area and must be secured from access by minors. Most of New York falls in USDA Zones 4-7. Use our zone map to find your exact planting dates. For a full breakdown of where and how you can grow, see our New York home grow laws guide.
No permit or license is required. Adults 21 and older may grow within the plant limits without registering with any state agency. Selling homegrown cannabis without a commercial license remains illegal. Read the full New York home grow law breakdown for complete details.
New York's shorter summers are best suited to autoflowering and short-season varieties. Autoflowers finish in 70-90 days regardless of light cycle, making them the most reliable outdoor option across the state. Short-season photoperiod varieties, which finish in late September to early October, are a strong choice for growers who want more control over plant size and yield without risking an early frost. Full-season genetics are a tighter fit and work best in the warmer downstate zones with a long head start indoors. Mold resistance is worth prioritizing in the Hudson Valley and coastal areas where late-summer humidity runs high. Not sure which zone you're in? Enter your zip code on our USDA zone map to see your specific outdoor window. Then browse autoflowering varieties, short-season varieties, or use our Strain Selection Guide to find the right fit.
Most New York growers start seeds indoors in late April and transplant outdoors after the last frost, typically mid-May for downstate growers and late May for upstate. Autoflowering varieties can be started later since they are not dependent on day length. Check your zip code on our zone map for specific dates, or see our germination guide for step-by-step starting instructions.
