Montana Cannabis Seeds: Common Questions

Yes. Montana voters approved recreational cannabis legalization, and home cultivation for adults 21 and older became legal on July 1, 2023, under Mont. Code Ann. § 16-12-106. Adults may legally purchase cannabis seeds for personal cultivation without a permit or medical card. Triangle Hemp ships cannabis seeds directly to Montana customers.
Yes. Triangle Hemp ships cannabis seeds to Montana home growers. Orders are packaged discreetly and typically go out within 1-2 business days. Questions about your order? Text or call us M-F, 10-6 EST at (919) 410-6945.
Cannabis plants are either male or female. Only female plants produce the buds (flowers) you're growing for. Feminized seeds are bred to produce female plants almost exclusively, so you're not wasting space, time, or resources on males that need to be removed. All of the seeds we sell are feminized.
Photoperiod varieties flower in response to a change in light schedule. Outdoors, they begin flowering naturally as days shorten in late summer. Indoors, you trigger flowering by switching to a 12-hours-on/12-hours-off schedule. They typically take longer to finish but give you more control over plant size and yield.

Autoflower varieties flower automatically based on age, usually finishing 9-12 weeks from seed regardless of light schedule. Given Montana's short outdoor season in most of the state — with frosts possible as early as late August at elevation — autoflowers are the most reliable outdoor choice for the majority of Montana growers. Not sure which is right for you? See our Strain Selection Guide.
CBD (cannabidiol) and CBG (cannabigerol) are non-psychoactive compounds found naturally in the cannabis plant. People commonly report CBD as calming and supportive for sleep, stress, and everyday discomfort. CBG is often described as more clarifying, associated with focus and a lighter sense of ease. Both are widely used as alternatives to pharmaceutical options for mild anxiety, inflammation, and pain.

Many growers find that blending CBD or CBG varieties with THC varieties produces a more balanced experience. Growing your own gives you direct control over what goes into your plants. Check out our Strain Selection Guide to explore our hemp varieties.
Each adult may grow up to two mature plants and two seedlings. The household maximum is four mature plants and four seedlings, regardless of how many adults share the address — the limit does not stack beyond two adults' worth. Montana's plant count is among the more restrictive in legal states, which makes strain selection and maximizing each plant's output more important. Read the full Montana home grow law breakdown for details.
Yes. Both indoor and outdoor cultivation are permitted. Outdoor plants must not be visible by unaided vision from a public place and must be kept in a locked space. An open fenced yard does not satisfy the locked requirement — a locked greenhouse or fully enclosed locked structure is needed for outdoor grows. Use our zone map to find your specific planting window. See our Montana home grow laws guide for the full breakdown.
Yes. Montana's statute requires that you either own the private residence where you are cultivating, or have written permission from the property owner. This is a legal requirement, not just a best practice. A verbal agreement from your landlord is not sufficient — get written consent before setting up any grow in a rental property. Property owners also retain the right to prohibit cultivation regardless of state law.
Yes. Each plant must be tagged with your name, driver's license number, and a notation that the cannabis is for personal use. This applies to both mature plants and seedlings. Keep a copy of your state ID with your grow documentation. Plant tags are how compliance is confirmed.
Montana spans USDA Zones 3-6, with most of the state in Zones 4-5. The outdoor season varies significantly by location — in the western valleys around Missoula and the Flathead Valley, growers have a workable late May through late September window. At elevation and in eastern Montana, frosts can arrive as early as late August. Autoflowering varieties finishing in 70-80 days are the safest choice for most Montana outdoor growers. In the warmer western valleys with a longer season, short-season photoperiod varieties finishing in September are also viable. Enter your zip code on our zone map for your specific window, then browse autoflowering varieties or short-season varieties.
In western Montana's lower valleys, most outdoor growers start seeds indoors in late March to April and transplant after the last frost, typically late May. At higher elevations and in eastern Montana, wait until early to mid-June to be safe. Autoflowering varieties can be started later since they are not dependent on day length. Remember outdoor plants require a locked enclosed structure — plan your setup before germinating. Check your zip code on our zone map for specific frost dates, or see our germination guide for step-by-step starting instructions.
