South Dakota Cannabis Seeds: Common Questions

Yes. Cannabis seeds are federally legal hemp products under the 2018 Farm Bill and can be purchased and shipped to all 50 states including South Dakota. Triangle Hemp ships seeds directly to South Dakota customers. Home cultivation in South Dakota requires registration in the state medical cannabis program and specific cultivation authorization on your card — recreational home growing is not permitted.
Yes. Triangle Hemp ships cannabis seeds to South Dakota customers. Orders are packaged discreetly and typically go out within 1-2 business days. Questions about your order? Text or call us M-F, 10-6 EST at (919) 410-6945.
Cannabis plants are either male or female. Only female plants produce the buds (flowers) you're growing for. Feminized seeds are bred to produce female plants almost exclusively, so you're not wasting space, time, or resources on males that need to be removed. All of the seeds we sell are feminized.
Photoperiod varieties flower in response to a change in light schedule. Outdoors, they begin flowering naturally as days shorten in late summer. Indoors, you trigger flowering by switching to a 12-hours-on/12-hours-off schedule. They typically take longer to finish but give more control over plant size and yield.

Autoflower varieties flower automatically based on age, usually finishing 9-12 weeks from seed regardless of light schedule. South Dakota's short outdoor season — with frosts possible in late August in some areas — makes autoflowers the most reliable outdoor choice for most patients. Not sure which is right for you? See our Strain Selection Guide.
CBD (cannabidiol) and CBG (cannabigerol) are non-psychoactive compounds found naturally in the cannabis plant. People commonly report CBD as calming and supportive for sleep, stress, and everyday discomfort. CBG is often described as more clarifying, associated with focus and a lighter sense of ease. Both are widely used as alternatives to pharmaceutical options for mild anxiety, inflammation, and pain.

Many growers find that blending CBD or CBG varieties with THC varieties produces a more balanced experience. Growing your own gives you direct control over what goes into your plants. Check out our Strain Selection Guide to explore our hemp varieties.
Yes. Home cultivation requires registration in the South Dakota Medical Cannabis Program (SDMCP). Importantly, cultivation authorization is not automatic with your card — it must be applied for separately as part of your card application. Growing without that specific authorization on your card is not permitted even if you are a registered patient. Applications are submitted at medcannabisapplication.sd.gov. The card fee is $75 ($30 for low-income applicants). Read the full South Dakota home grow law breakdown for details.
Authorized patients may grow up to two flowering plants and two non-flowering plants, for a total of four plants at any one time under SDCL 34-20G. All plants must be grown in a locked enclosure. South Dakota draws a clear line between flowering and non-flowering plants, so monitor your garden carefully as plants transition from vegetative growth into flower. Read the full South Dakota home grow law breakdown for details.
Qualifying conditions under SDCL 34-20G-1(8) include cancer, HIV/AIDS, multiple sclerosis, epilepsy or seizure disorders, Crohn's disease, PTSD, ALS, and glaucoma, among other debilitating conditions. A licensed South Dakota physician, physician assistant, or advanced practice registered nurse must certify that you have a qualifying condition and are likely to benefit from medical cannabis.
South Dakota spans USDA Zones 3-5 with a short, often unpredictable outdoor season. Most of the state sits in Zones 3b-4b, with the southeastern corner edging into Zone 5. The outdoor window typically runs from late May through mid-September, with early frosts possible in late August in northern areas. Autoflowering varieties finishing in 70-80 days are the safest outdoor choice across most of the state. With only four plants allowed, compact, high-performing genetics that thrive indoors are also well worth considering — indoor grows let you maximize your limited plant count year-round regardless of season. Enter your zip code on our zone map for your specific window, then browse autoflowering varieties or use our Strain Selection Guide.
Most South Dakota outdoor growers start seeds indoors in late April and transplant outside after the last frost, typically late May to early June. Autoflowers are the practical choice given the state's short season — a fast-finishing autoflower started in late May can wrap up well ahead of the first fall frost. All cultivation must take place in a locked enclosure, so plan your outdoor setup before germinating. Check your zip code on our zone map for specific frost dates, or see our germination guide for step-by-step starting instructions.
