Virginia Cannabis Seeds: Common Questions

Yes. Virginia legalized adult-use cannabis effective July 1, 2021. Adults 21 and older may legally purchase cannabis seeds for personal cultivation without a medical card or special permit. Triangle Hemp ships cannabis seeds directly to Virginia customers.
Yes. Triangle Hemp ships cannabis seeds to Virginia home growers. Orders are packaged discreetly and typically go out within 1-2 business days. Questions about your order? Text or call us M-F, 10-6 EST at (919) 410-6945.
Cannabis plants are either male or female. Only female plants produce the buds (flowers) you're growing for. Feminized seeds are bred to produce female plants almost exclusively, so you're not wasting space, time, or resources on males that need to be removed. All of the seeds we sell are feminized.
Photoperiod varieties flower in response to a change in light schedule. Outdoors, they begin flowering naturally as days shorten in late summer. Indoors, you trigger flowering by switching to a 12-hours-on/12-hours-off schedule. They typically take longer to finish but give you more control over plant size and yield.

Autoflower varieties flower automatically based on age, usually finishing 9-12 weeks from seed regardless of light schedule. Virginia's growing season is long enough in most zones to support both types outdoors, making it one of the more flexible states for variety selection. Not sure which is right for you? See our Strain Selection Guide.
CBD (cannabidiol) and CBG (cannabigerol) are non-psychoactive compounds found naturally in the cannabis plant. People commonly report CBD as calming and supportive for sleep, stress, and everyday discomfort. CBG is often described as more clarifying, associated with focus and a lighter sense of ease. Both are widely used as alternatives to pharmaceutical options for mild anxiety, inflammation, and pain.

Many growers find that blending CBD or CBG varieties with THC varieties produces a more balanced experience. Growing your own gives you direct control over what goes into your plants. Check out our Strain Selection Guide to explore our hemp varieties.
Virginia allows four plants per household under Virginia Code § 4.1-1101. This is a household cap, not a per-person limit — two adults sharing a home still have a combined maximum of four plants, not four each. Read the full Virginia home grow law breakdown for details.
Yes — and this is one requirement many new growers miss. Each plant must be labeled with your name, your driver's license or state ID number, and a notation that it is for personal use only. A simple waterproof label on each plant's stake or container covers it. Failure to tag plants is a civil violation with a fine of up to $25. It's easy to get right from the start.
Yes. Outdoor, greenhouse, and indoor cultivation are all permitted as long as plants are not visible from a public space and cannot be accessed by anyone under 21. A fenced backyard, locked outbuilding, or enclosed greenhouse all work. An open front yard or any area visible from the street does not qualify. Use our zone map to find your planting dates. For the full breakdown, see our Virginia home grow laws guide.
No. Any adult 21 or older can grow up to four plants at home without a medical card or special permit. If you rent, landlords are allowed to prohibit cultivation in lease agreements — check your lease before you plant. Read the full Virginia home grow law breakdown for complete details.
Virginia spans USDA Zones 5b-8b, making it one of the more favorable states for outdoor cannabis. Most growers fall in Zones 6b-7b, with a season running roughly late April to late October — long enough for most full-season photoperiod varieties to finish comfortably. Mountain growers in western Virginia have shorter seasons where short-season and autoflowering varieties are the better fit. Coastal and Tidewater growers have the longest seasons in the state. Enter your zip code on our zone map for your specific window, then browse our full-season varieties, short-season varieties, or autoflowering varieties.
Most Virginia outdoor growers start seeds indoors in late March to mid-April and transplant outdoors after the last frost, typically late April in southern and coastal Virginia and mid-May in the mountains and northern areas. Virginia's long season means full-season photoperiod plants started in April can finish well before the first fall frost in most of the state. Check your zip code on our zone map for specific dates, or see our germination guide for step-by-step starting instructions.
